THE WEST CHARLOTTE COALITION

The Church United For West Charlotte

Social Mobility studies reveal that Charlotte is divided by race, income, family structure, school quality, and social capital. A growing collaborative of churches, non-profit organizations, and marketplace leaders called The West Charlotte Coalition is actively engaged in bringing Biblical Justice to these stubborn facts in the zip code of 28208.  This Coalition exists to serve children and families in the neighborhoods nearest to the eight Title 1 schools within 3 miles of us.

The West Charlotte Coalition unites around a love for Jesus and a love for our city. We express this through weekly Wednesday prayer, monthly collaborative worship gatherings, church-school partnerships, and reconciling relationships. We have a particular focus on reading support for K-3 students. Together, we can achieve measurable positive results for the emerging generations in our part of the city. But first and foremost, it all starts with Prayer.

Join us at Center City Church (inside The Movement Center at 2225 Freedom Drive) for weekly Wednesday Prayer from Noon to 1 p.m. This recurring event on our calendars is the immovable pillar to our movement, and the essential starting point for engagement in our part of the city.

We look forward to meeting with you and praying alongside you!

Volunteering with CMS

Are you interested in volunteering at one of our focus schools as a tutor or reading buddy? The first step is to make sure you have your background check complete. Click here to take this simple next step. Then, make sure to connect with the Reading Specialist on campus. For help finding a school and a student, email marc@forcharlotte.org.

Reading Buddies and Active Listening A-B-C’s

Our friends from Read Charlotte help resource the city so that we can best serve our neighborhood students who need reading support. This 3-minute video (bottom of the page) is a helpful tool in preparing us for being a great reading buddy for a West Charlotte K-3 student.

Experiential Learning: A Month in Poverty

What does it feel like to walk a mile in the shoes of a lower income West Charlotte neighbor? Click here to take an online poverty simulation—and why not invite your kids to do it with you? There is power in “seeking first to understand.” It’s more than a game—this is reality for many of our neighbors.

WHAT TO EXPECT: Weekly, fervent, Kingdom-centered Prayer is the hallmark of our nascent movement. Our heart is to keep Jesus at the center of all that we do, as we pray for our city and our neighbors. Each week is facilitated by a different leader in our Coalition. Anyone is welcome to join us. Stay for a few minutes or the entire hour. Or, pray with us wherever you may be. The monthly Prayer Guide is available for download in the Network Resources section below.

WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO: Last month, Pastor James Scott (The Exchange Church) challenged us with “Why We Pursue Reconciling Relationships”—one of the pillars of our movement. The MP3, recorded at Renovatus Church, is available for download here.
